The Denis G. Brearley Memorial Bibliography of Orthodox Church Music

Denis G. Brearley (1944-2017) was a professor in the Department of Classics & Religious Studies, University of Ottawa from 1967-2004. He served as chairman of the Department of Classical Studies from 1975-1980 and 1993-1995. After retirement, he continued to work on various projects concerning the history of Orthodox church music outside Russia in the 20th Century, giving papers in North America at regional conferences and in Russia (2008 and 2010).

His “magnum opus,” to which he devoted over 30 years of his life, was the compilation of a database of Russian Orthodox Church music, which is, in his own words, “a bibliographical reference bank of all books, articles, notes and other published materials which had scholarly content or other data on the subject of Orthodox Church Music. Having compiled the bibliography, he spent many years locating and photocopying the sources listed therein. It is this material that forms the core of the Denis G. Brearley Memorial Bibliography.
