Steinberg, Maximilian

STEINBERG, Maximilian Oseevich (1883–1946) — Russian composer, conductor, and educator, graduated in 1908 from the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a student of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Glazunov, and Anatoly Liadov. Married Rimsky-Korsakov's daugher Nadezhda, and upon Rimsky-Korsakov's death became a faculty member at the St. Petersburg (later Leningrad) Conservatory, where he taught theory and composition and orchestration. Among his many students was Dmitry Shostakovich. Steinberg's only sacred choral work is the eleven-part cycle “Passion Week,” op. 13, based almost entirely upon archaic ecclesiastical chants, with which he likely became acquainted with Rimsky-Korsakov's guidance: several of the same chant melodies were polyphonically arranged by Rimsky-Korsakov as well. Composed in early 1920s, during the turbulent post-revolutionary years, Steinberg's was never performed in the composer’s lifetime, a bitter fact that he recorded in a diary entry, when the Communist Bolshevik commissars banned the performance of all sacred music. He succeeded in getting the score published with W. Bessel of Paris in 1928, but it langushed in obscurity until it was revived by Cappella Romana of Portland, Oregon (Alexadner Lingas, conductor) and The Clarion Choir of New York City (Steven Fox, conductor).
